Are Black Cats Good Luck or Bad Luck

by Joi

Black Cat

Black cats are sometimes thought to symbolize bad luck. But they haven’t always had that reputation.

King Charles I of England was absolutely convinced that his beloved black cat was his good luck charm. He carried his pet everywhere with him – he was never without it by his side.

When the cat died, the King was distraught and grieved for it deeply. He was also convinced that all of his good fortune died along with his “good luck charm.”  He told others that his life would never be the same again and that all his luck was gone.

The very next day, he was arrested and subsequently beheaded! Think maybe he was onto something?!

One of the sweetest cats I ever had was a black beauty named Renee Elise.  She was completely good luck for me and everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.

I have a three-year-old Shorthair/Bombay mix, and while I may not be able to contest that he’s good or bad luck per se, he’s definitely the most affectionate cat I’ve seen. I’ve never seen a cat claw at the windows squeaking when you come home and wrap himself around your legs when you walk inside. He loves having conversations and plays fetch with little balls of wadded-up paper. As well, most cats I’ve seen prefer solitude, but this cat will chase you around the house to play and loves just laying next to you as you sit. So maybe not a good luck charm, but this little ball of fuzz definitely lightens up a bad day.

Hey!
My black cat Siouxsie always brought me good luck. When I had to study for exams he would sit on my lap the whole day when I was studying and I never failed :D
He died in February (22 years old) after I moved to Germany for my studies. He has been my little friend since I was 3 years old….I really miss him!

Black cats don`t bring neither good luck or bad luck…they are just black.

Hello this is a remarkable likeness of my little girl “Pushka” who was mauled to death in a horrible incident 2nd day of the new year. Incredible likeness perhaps may find a puss just like her again some day soon Colin

Pushka… what a beautiful name! So sorry about her accident. Heartbreaking!

My Cat JayJay looks just like the cat pictured right down to the one eye sorta open look. She’s from the shelter, I had no idea that black cats are adopted at a lower rate than other cats, that’s how strong the bad luck myth presists.

She is JayJay for Joan Jett, both were Runaways and into black! :)

I had a black cat named Simba ever since I was little, and he was the best cat that I ever had. I don’t really know where the black cats are bad luck thing came from, but I do know that it most definitely isn’t true. He was the sweetest thing and would let you dress him up and parade him around.. far nicer than my little gray cat that I have now, who bites! I think that black cats might be good luck..

My black cat was called Kitty, her adoption name was Diamond. She loved to have a good conversation, even when it was 6 in the morning. She was always there for me when I cried. I miss her so much. I missed having a bucket of love to snuggle with.

Lalala, I love when cats are conversational! My Alexa is a really big talker. It doesn’t matter to her if it’s 3 am or 3 pm, she loves to talk to me and loves it when I talk to her.

Losing cats is so awfully painful. I’ve lost more than my share of them and it just breaks my heart each time. I’m very sorry for your loss – Kitty sounds like she was a very special little girl!

My Tazz is a solid black stray. He was found with his six sisters behind a dumpster. Mind you, he was the only male, the runt, and the only black kitten. All the others were beautiful, striped, diiferent colors, and larger. All were taken by co-workers, except the little black male runt. I wasn’t into cats. But a co-worker begged me to take him. No one wanted him. Well, its been four years and he is a joy to be around. Healthy, loves to talk, cuddles with anyone. Ask what happened to the six cute little females?! All of them were let go one way or another. The vet often calls Tazz one lucky cat.
