Beautiful Jigsaw Puzzle for Cat Lovers

June 2, 2020 By Joi

When you have cats for babies, working jigsaw puzzles can be a challenge – some cats just want to sit and watch, which is great, but most think it’s an interactive game! Sure, it’s fun and downright adorable, but true puzzle-working has to wait until the baby wears itself out or finds something else to be amused by.

I have to say, though, the fun of working a crossword puzzle is worth the extra effort. I’m a jigsaw puzzle addict and am always on the hunt for a colorful, challenging, and fun new puzzle adventure.

I love this one I just found on Amazon, the Cat Bookshelf Puzzle (Amazon link). When you click through the link, you can view the image better (certainly larger), and you can read the special titles on each cat’s book. It is extra, extra cute.

I also love the beautiful tuxedo cat sprawled out on top of the books. He/She is giving the PURRFECT expression – this is exactly how a cat would look at their human if they were daring to interrupt their slumber for something as common as a taking a photo! We have a few tuxedo cats and this one reminds me so much of them. Makes me love the puzzle even more!

Missing Hannah….

April 23, 2015 By Joi

Sweet Hannah

One sure-fire way to tell something is up (and not a good sort of up) with my beloved cats is to see when I last updated my cat blog.  I’ve had cats all my life and usually more than two at a time.

That’s a lot of cats!

It’s also a lot of laughs, a lot of love, and… sadly, a lot of loss. If I disappear from here for a few weeks, you can rest assured that a furry member of the family is involved.

One of the sweetest cats I’ve ever loved or had the pleasure of calling “family” was Hannah, pictured here. Most cats are sweet – in fact, all of my cats (well… maybe not Carly!) have been uncommonly sweet.  Some (like Prissy, Queen Fatima, and Bo) were so sweet they’d all but leave sugar in their footsteps. Our inside cat, Alexa, is a total sweetheart. She also comes with a side of sass (after all, Carly was her mom, so how could she not?!)

Then there was Hannah.  I can’t put my finger on it – and goodness knows I’ve tried – but she was the very definition of sweet.  It oozed from her. She was also a bit of a clown and would gyrate into the most bizarre positions just to make me laugh. Then she’d lie on her back, purring, watching me laugh.

She was also kind of mischievous and, like all cat parents know, cats can be just like toddlers.  I brushed her daily because she tended to shed quite a bit – plus she enjoyed it even more than I did, so it was a special time for both of us. It also made her hair extra shiny, which I loved… while it lasted.

Here’s where the mischievous streak came into play.  I would brush her and, of course, tell her how beautiful she was, then she’d inevitably find the nearest pile of grass, gravel, or dirt and roll in it but good – seldom breaking eye contact with me. There she is doing her thing in the picture above.

She’d also love to torment people when they came in and out of our back door. She’d always lay on the top step and wouldn’t budge an inch for anyone but me. I’m pretty sure she only moved for me because she knew my coming and going was associated with food, water, and brushing.

Besides, she tormented me enough with the rolling.

I can picture all my family member’s gyrations as they tried to squeeze in and out of the door without disturbing her. I’m pretty sure that each time they twisted, wiggled in and sarcastically said, “Don’t let me disturb you, Hannah.” – she got a little kick out of the production and thought, “I win again.” She became VERY set in her ways in her golden years.  As far as she was concerned, it was HER step and how dare anyone keep intruding on it.

Never-mind the fact I had her a big comfy chair, wooden “penthouse” complete with heated pad, and even a “tent.” She preferred the step – at least during the hours family was coming and going!

Mischievous.

She also knew the sound and sight of my car as well as my husband’s. She’d sashay right in front of us as we were driving up the driveway. Then she’d stop. I’d have to get out of the car or come out of the house to pick  her up and put her, sweetly, in her big comfy chair.

She was one of a kind and words can’t describe how much I miss her, her purring, or her antics.

(Continued beneath Hannah’s picture…)

Hannah

She came into our life years ago – just when she and I needed one another the most. I’d just lost two also much-loved cats (Bo and Svenn) and was feeling about as down as down gets. She had been abandoned by a family that had just moved. Being jerks, they simply turned her out.  At least we live in a rural area, so they didn’t turn her loose on a busy city street or anything.

I was sitting in the front yard and out of the corner of my eye, I saw a beautiful tuxedo cat with huge, beautiful green eyes. She was obviously scared and hungry and wanted to approach me but was – at the same time – afraid to do so.

I bolted inside for some leftover turkey and sat down on the grass near her. With enough “baby talk” and coaxing, she was soon in my lap eating turkey from my hand. I fixed her up a spot on the carport and offered her a forever home and endless love. She took me up on the offer.

The forever didn’t last nearly long enough.

On that first day, I noticed right away that she’d been de-clawed. When she played, her little front paws felt more like powder puffs than paws. She also had a few teeth missing – I din’t ask about those, I just pretended not to notice.  I actually chose the name Hannah for her as I was running in for turkey. Hannah (in the Bible) received an answer to prayer and since this little tuxedo cat seemed like an answer to prayer, I thought the name fit perfectly.

I am so thankful to have had the many years I did with this beautiful little girl – but I’m not at all ashamed of being greedy enough to have wanted many more.

I’m also thankful that, on her last day with us, I was able to hold her and tell her how much I loved her. Funny, isn’t it, when we’re saying our “goodbyes” to a pet, we always tell them how good they were too, don’t we. I must have told her what a “good girl” she was a million times over her last few days.

This loss (just like previous losses) hurts and it hurts really bad. Anyone who has loved and lost a cat knows that the pain doesn’t just go away. You simply learn to hold the tears in until no one else is around.

Or until you’re writing a tribute to your “good cat” on your cat blog.

That’s why I’ve been putting off updating Cat Pause. I knew I’d see reminders of her absolutely everywhere – as well as her name and precious face. I guess, subconsciously, I put off working on my cat blog because I was waiting to return when I could do this without tears. My subconscious isn’t too smart.

Hannah

I took the picture of Hannah, below, through the back door’s window – so it isn’t very clear. I looked outside that afternoon to see what Hannah was up to and she was sitting like that – looking right at the door. I looked around to try to figure out why she looked so bewildered and saw that a momma skunk and two babies were at Hannah’s food dish.

She DID NOT approve… even though she did think highly of their handsome colors.

(Final thoughts beneath the picture…)

Hannah and Little Stinker

The updates will come regularly now – in fact the next post is about something Hannah LOVED.

Cherish every minute you have with your cat(s). Play with them, pet them, and let them know how much they’re loved.  Ironically, I have one (Alexa) demanding my attention right now… so you know what that means. It’s time to finish writing and begin playing.

Life isn’t the same without this funny little cat, but it wasn’t the same with her either. It was filled with a lot more love and laughter because of her and I’ll be forever thankful to God for bringing her into our lives and grateful to her for consenting to stay.

She’ll be in my heart forever…. rolling and purring.

Adorable Wall Decal With Black Kittens

Kitten Poem Tree

If you love black cats as much as I do, you’ll love the black kittens wall decal too.  I’m not sure which more accurately depicts kittens, the one who finds himself in a bit of a “spot” (thanks to an overactive imagination and endless curiosity!) or the one on the ground watching the show…. as though she wouldn’t dream of doing such a thing. I’m pretty sure my beautiful grand-kitty Janie would be the one hanging from a branch. There’s nothing that girl won’t get into!

Last time I did a post about black cats and saying how much I loved them – it did my heart a lot of good to hear from so many people telling me about their love for black cats.  My e-mail was full of stories about people’s “babies” and they were a lot of characters! I loved reading all of them.  I totally agree with everyone else who loves black cats – they are gorgeous.  The shiny black fur and the way it contrasts with the green eyes… absolutely beautiful.

Over the years, I’ve had the pleasure of having 3 solid black cats and one “Tuxedo” black cat (Hannah – one of the sweetest cats to EVER live).  My daughter Emily and her husband Dill have feisty little Janie to keep them on their toes.  I’m hoping many more will sashay into our lives. They’re really, really something special.

Click through the wall decal above for a closer look and to read the adorable poem.  Can you say MUST HAVE?!

Janie July 2013

Miss Janie (above), staring down at the purse she just nudged off the table. For the second time! What’s nuts is that the purse out-weighed her by about 10 pounds.

Hannah and her Belly

Hannah (above) showing off her belly! I swear, she’s a total mess. She’s one of the rare cats that invites you to pet her stomach. Apparently she’s kind of into it.

How to Keep Outside Cats Warm this Winter

September 23, 2012 By Joi

Cordless Heating Thermal Bed for Cats

While we have one inside cat (Alexa the Diva), we also have two beloved outside cats (Hannah and Queen Fatima).  Needless to say, when cold weather hits, thoughts of keeping our outside little girls warm are in the front of our collective minds. We live outside the city limits with a garage and an abandoned barn beside us.  Fatima is wonderful about heading off to the garage (which we keep cracked for them to get in and out of) or even the barn, but Hannah?

She always seems afraid that she’s going to miss something and doesn’t leave the carport until snow, ice, hail, or a tornado force her into the garage.  Even then, as soon as the coast is clear, she’s back to her favorite spot by the back door!

If Alexa weren’t so set in her ways, the solution would be obvious – bring them inside.  But, alas, Alexa claims “First come, first served” rights and there you have it.  She who must be obeyed…. must be obeyed.

Don’t worry about Miss Hannah, though. I have become quite the accomplished tent builder for my adorable little girl. Last winter was ridiculously mild here in Kentucky, so my Abdul the Tent-maker skills served Hannah well. However, I’ve heard that this winter is supposed to be a really bad one, so I’m trying to step up my game.

One of the things I’ve found so far is the Slumber Pet Thermal Cat Mat – Color Gray (shown above). This thermal mat is available in gray, blue, or beige.

Thermal Cat Bed Features:

  • Thermal cat mat keeps cats warm and comfortable without the use of electricity
  • This cozy mat features a lightweight core that actually reflects pet’s own body heat back to the animal
  • Provides soothing comfort to cats, kittens, aging pets, nursing females, or animals recovering from illness or injury
  • Machine-washable pad features a leopard-print motif that reverses to solid black berber fleece and it includes a hangtag
  • Measures 22-inch length by 18 1/2-inch width

Product Description

This cozy mat features a lightweight core that actually reflects pet’s own body heat back to the animal. Provides soothing comfort to cats, kittens, aging pets, nursing females, or animals recovering from illness or injury. Machine-washable pad features a leopard-print motif that reverses to solid black berber fleece. Machine wash in cold water on gentle cycle. Line dry. It includes a hangtag. Available in gray color. Measures 22-inch length by 18 1/2-inch width.

I also found the K&H Outdoor Kitty House, Heated (pictured on the left – click through for different… much larger… views).  This Outdoor Heated Kitty House is made with 600 denier nylon and features a vinyl backing that makes it waterproof.

Your cat’s own warm little  house comes with and accommodates a Lectro Soft Outdoor Heated Kitty Bed that uses only 20-watts. The roof hangs over the 2 doors to keep cats warm, safe and dry. Easy to assemble with velcro walls and a zippered roof.

My favorite part (aside from the whole keeping cats warm and dry part) is this: There’s a back door! Two exits mean your cat can’t be trapped by another cat, a dog that likes to play too tough, or skunk that wants to snuggle.

Outdoor Heated Cat House Features:

  • Perfect for any outdoor cat
  • Waterproof for use anywhere outdoors
  • Two exits so pet can not be trapped by predators
  • No tools needed to assemble
  • MET Listed and 1-year warranty

Click through either link or picture for more information.  Each is actually on sale right now – marked WAY down.  That’s always a bonus as far as I’m concerned! 🙂

Top Cat Poisons: Household Products, Medicines, and Plants

June 7, 2012 By Joi

Hannah Showing off Her Belly

Hannah, Showing Off!

I think that most of us cat lovers don’t really realize how often cats are harmed (and often killed) by poisons they come in contact with in their home or yard.  I know that when I read that, in 2011 alone, the ASPCA  fielded 166,000 calls about cases of pet poisoning, I was alarmed. When you consider that at least that many probably went unreported, it’s staggering.

While we think we know what things are harmful to our precious cats and what things could even poison them, it’s always a great idea to refresh ourselves. It’s also a smart idea to let anyone and everyone who comes into contact with the feline members of the family know that some things are completely off limits.

WebMD recently ran a great article detailing the top cat poisons.   A few are listed below – but I hope you’ll click through and read the entire list. Please pass the link around to everyone you know.  By doing so, you could be saving a cat from a world of pain, sickness and suffering.  What’s more, you could save her life.

The top five sources of cat poisoning in 2011 were:

1. Medications for people. Pets have a much greater sensitivity to many of the common over-the-counter and prescription medications that may be in your home.

Some of the medications that often poison cats include:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen or naproxen. The most common cause of pet poisoning, these painkillers can cause ulcers in the stomach and intestines, and kidney damage.
  • Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is particularly toxic to cats, resulting in red blood cell damage. Just two extra-strength tablets may prove fatal to felines.
  • Antidepressants may cause vomiting and, in more serious instances, serotonin syndrome – a dangerous condition that raises temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure, and may cause seizures.
  • Methylphenidate, an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drug, is a stimulant for pets, raising heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature.

2. House plants. Cats are notorious for noshing on houseplants, and the habit isn’t just bad for your potted treasures. Many common, beautiful houseplants contain cat poisons that can cause serious harm, and even death. Some of the plants toxic to cats include:

  • Lilies. Ingesting even small amounts of Easter lilies and related plants can cause severe kidney failure in cats.
  • Azaleas and rhododendrons. These pretty flowering plants contain toxins that may result in vomiting, diarrhea, coma, and sometimes even death.
  • Tulips and daffodils. The bulbs of these plants, if ingested, may cause serious stomach problems, convulsions, and damage to the heart.
  • Sago palms. Eating just a few seeds may be enough to cause vomiting, seizures, and liver failure.

Please read the other cat poisons and keep your precious cats safe.  Some of the hidden dangers will surprise you.  We all have to keep in mind that leaving residual household cleaner on the floor (or anywhere our cats sit or lie) could pose a real problem. They may not lick it off of the floor or table (though I wouldn’t put it past some cats!), but if any gets on their fur, they WILL lick it when they give themselves a bath.

Miss Hannah and Little Bunny Foo Foo

April 11, 2012 By Joi

My beautiful and sweet Hannah Our normally sweet, laid-back, and  incredibly gentle cat Hannah!

Hannah, pictured above, is the sweetest, most laid-back cat in the world. She’s so sweet, in fact, that a lot of times when I’m talking to or about her, I’ll say “Sweet Hannah,” as though it’s her official name. Which makes her recent behavior so astounding!

For one thing, she has been incredibly grouchy with our other two outside cats, Jelly Bean and Queen Fatima.  A few nights ago, I guess she thought Jelly Bean looked at her the wrong way ’cause she jumped on him and rolled him around. SO not like her!

Something else she did that was highly (highly) out of character: She came bouncing right up to me last night with a baby bunny in her mouth.

  1. She never hunts
  2. She’s too lazy to spend the energy required to make a kill
  3. Unlike Tigger, Hannah doesn’t bounce

I’m guessing that Jelly Bean (the only one that could possibly do such a thing) made like Elmer Fudd, then Hannah took his prize from him. After all, Hannah’s so laid-back and poses such a low risk to anything and anyone that birds frolic within inches of her. I once saw a cardinal land practically on her tail to reach a sunflower seed.

She never even noticed.

Cats are fascinating, aren’t they? Just when we think we’ve got them figured out…. they come bouncing up with a most un-welcomed guest.

This morning, Hannah’s basking in the sun, lazily watching the birds at the bird feeders and all’s right with the world again.  When I fed her breakfast, I asked her about Little Bunny Foo Foo this morning but she just gave me an innocent look and kept eating.  I promised her I wouldn’t tell anyone about the incident – but I never promised I wouldn’t write about it.

Gorgeous Black and White Cats Art Print

Black and White Cats
Black and White Cats
Buy This at Allposters.com

The art print above reminds me of black and white cats we’ve had over the years.  Currently, I have a handsome solid black little boy cat (Jelly Bean) and my oldest daughter Emily has a beautiful solid black little girl cat (Janie). My Hannah has quite a bit of white on her, but she still has that shiny black fur I love so much!

I’ve never had a SOLID white cat but we did have a very special cat named “Whiskers” who was completely snow white except for a little patch of peach and black on her forehead. When she had kittens, she actually had two with identical patches on their foreheads.  They were as adorable as their mother.

Funny, cat lovers always remember every detail about all the cats in their life, no matter how many we’ve had!

Outoor Cat House Keeps Outdoor Cats Warm and Dry

November 10, 2011 By Joi

What’s the best way to keep outdoor cats warm and dry during winter months (and safe and cozy year round)? With their own cat house, of course! The great looking The new and improved Kitty Tube. Fully insulated outdoor cat house., shown here, is the perfect solution.

Winters here in Kentucky can be pretty intense, so keeping our outside cats warm and dry is always a concern. It is of no concern to our inside cat, Alexa, so she has yet to extend them an invitation to join us inside.

The past few days have been not only cool, but extremely windy. This great looking insulated cat house would have been IDEAL. Hannah hates the wind as much as most cats hate rain.  The problem with Hannah is one a lot of cat parents run into, she wants to be close to the spot(s) she’s most familiar with. In her case, it’s the carport.  Her favorite outdoor furniture is there, her dishes are there, and (naturally) that’s where she sees her family the most.

When it gets cooler (and windy), I carry her out to the garage and show her around – trying to entice her into sleeping in there. My husband keeps the door open just enough for them to come and go as they please.  Queen Fatima and Jelly Bean love the garage.  They head for the loft and sleep for hours on end.

Then there’s Hannah.   Yesterday I kept looking out and seeing her hovering by the steps, cursing the wind.  It called for drastic action, so I fashioned a tent over a few outdoor chairs and placed her a blanket on the ground inside her tent. She practically ran inside.  Naturally, this earned her some of her favorite cat treats.

This ingenious cat house would be the answer to our problems.  Read and see for yourself how great it sounds!

Product Features

  • The Kitty Tube provides an economical, safe, and secure home for up to 3 cats. The Kitty Tube’s unique door design will also protect your cat from predators.
  • The Kitty Tube includes a custom, machine washable pet bed on top of the fully insulated floor. The floor, walls, and roof are all insulated with a high quality, high R value insulation. The Kitty Tube will stay cool in the summer, and is ultra warm in the winter. (Style of the custom pet bed may vary.)
  • The built in lifting handles can be adjusted to supply full flow through ventilation for the summer, and can be closed to retain heat in the winter.
  • The Kitty Tube is made from 100% post consumer content, consisting of recylced milk and detergent bottles. The Kitty Tube is an extremely green product, and proudly made in the USA.

Love Black Cats as Much as I Do? You’ll LOVE This Wall Decal!

Black Cats
Black Cats
Buy This Allposters.com
I read somewhere recently that black cats were the least adopted cats in animal shelters and pet stores. As a “mommy” to two black cats (in addition to other black babies I’ve loved over the years!), this both breaks my heart and blows my mind. I can only guess that it has something to do with the ridiculous “bad luck” saying, but it’s the most asinine thing I’ve ever heard!

Black cats are some of the most gorgeous cats in the world. Their shiny black coat is beautiful and silky soft and the contrast between the beautiful black fur and their beautiful eyes is something that’ll stop you in your tracks every single time.

What’s more, my experience with black cats has been that they’re super sweet and loving. I’m not suggesting that a cat’s fur color influences their personality or disposition, necessarily, but I can say this with absolute certainty: I have never had a black cat that wasn’t uncommonly sweet and affectionate. We had a very small black cat once we named Rene Elise. I named her after a beautiful actress who was on daytime television at the time (on One Life to Live, actually!). Rene Elise was a hugger. Any time you picked her up, she’d put her little arms around your neck and stay that way the entire time you held her or carried her around. She was beautifully solid black with a little pink nose and white whiskers. She was an absolute doll and couldn’t have been sweeter if she were covered in sugar.

Hannah is a black baby with a little white on  her and, like Rene Elise was, Hannah is as sweet as winter is long. Sweeter. Jelly Bean is solid black and is also a sweetheart.  Very affectionate and loving – a big baby! Which is really something because he was born to a feral cat that I cared for and fed.  She rarely let me touch her and her babies were the same way for a long time.  But once Jelly Bean and Fatima discovered that I was on their side, they became TOTAL love bugs!

If you, or someone you know, ever finds yourself looking for a cat to adopt, why not bring home a couple of black beauties? They’re very regal and you won’t regret it for a single second. In fact, you’ll probably go back for more!

Click through the beautiful and fun wall decal above for a closer look. Aren’t they precious?!?!

Cool Cat Toy: Boomerang Buddy with Catnip

July 14, 2011 By Joi

Take it from someone who spends oodles of time playing with cats, the Petstages Green Magic Boomerang Buddy is a kitty party just waiting to happen.

Like all kids, cats LOVE new and original toys. They love when mom and dad present them with something fresh, fun, and fabulous – you know, something deserving of their attention!

The Green Magic Boomerang Buddy is filled with 100% premium catnip for a powerful catnip scent, meaning your cat(s) will be over the moon.

Remember, playing with your cat isn’t just fun for you, it’s wonderful fun for you cat.  It’s also very good for his or her health – physical, emotional, and mental. Cats need the stimulation to stay mentally fit and the exercise keeps them physically fit and healthy.  Playtime is also a very special time to bond with your cat, so be sure to make time several times a day to just lose yourself in your cat’s world.

Earlier today, I was sitting outside with our outside cats (Hannah, Jelly Bean, and Queen Fatima).  I was playing with Hannah (with a long wildflower).  She’d paw at it, then go behind my back and pounce on it.  As you may remember, Jelly Bean and Queen Fatima were FERAL kittens when they came into our family.  It took months of extreme patience to get them to the point that I could even touch them! Thankfully, today I’m able to pet, rub, and babytalk them just as easily as I can Hannah or Alexa.

However, they’d never shown any inclination to play.  They’d always watch me and Hannah.  They’d sit right beside me, allowing me to pet them – and they’d even purr the entire time, but they never actually caught on to PLAY.

Until today.

As I slowly drug the wildflower on the ground in front of Queen Fatima (a tiny, adorable little grey cat), she pounced on it – kind of catching herself off guard.  I have no idea why, but tears sprang in my eyes as I tried not to laugh too loudly (they’re still really jumpy).  When I passed it in front of her again, she swatted at it and looked at Hannah as though to say, “Am I doing it right?”

Jelly Bean came over and decided to take part as well.  The only problem was, he decided to lay down right on top of our wildflower!

Game over.

He rolled over, exposing his belly, so of course I had to tickle it.  He playfully grabbed my hand, and I was very thankful he left his claws in.  I gotta admit, I was a little nervous.  I’ve tried to get pictures of them to add to the site, but they don’t pose nearly as well as Hannah and Alexa do.  They still aren’t sure about the whole camera thing and I’m not about to push things with them.  I’ve seen a lot of feral cats than NEVER let people touch them, I just feel extra blessed that my babies have come this far!
