This set of ceramic cat dishes (Amazon link) is so beautiful I wish they were available for the rest of the cat’s family… as in those of us who are (normally) human!
Things I love about these beauties…
- They’re Shallow. A cat is extremely uncomfortable eating out of a dish that brushes against their whiskers. They lack the longer snout of say a dog or possum to allow them to easily eat out of anything that isn’t shallow.
- They Feature No Skid Bottoms. If your cats are like our little pigs, they often lick the plate until you’re certain the plate will disintegrate! Our cats lick and chase their dishes all over the kitchen floor. With the no skid bottoms these have, at least the plates will stay in place while the little piggies get every last bite!
- They’re Dishwasher Safe. As the dish washer of the family… my cats refuse this chore… this matters and it matters a lot. It isn’t so much that I wouldn’t want to wash my cats dishes, but I feel like they get cleaner in a hot dishwasher with heated drying.
- They’re Ceramic. LOVE this. Plastic not only can contain chemicals I don’t want around our cats, but it also gets scratches and tends to look worn – no self respecting cat wants their dinnerware looking like that! These dishes are actually made in a facility that typically makes human grade products for the healthcare and food industries. How cool is that?!
More about the whiskers brushing against the sides of a dish:
From the manufacturer: “The thought of tired whiskers may sound silly, but the truth is, whisker fatigue is real and cause problems like lack of appetite, changes in mood for your kitty. Whiskers are actually called vibrissa, the touch receptors that reach deeper to connect with the nervous system of the cat. When your cat’s whiskers touch the sides of traditional food bowl (Too Deep & High), the sensation of bumping sensitive whiskers may cause him whisker fatigue—pain and stress.
There’s an easy solution for whisker fatigue. Switch out your cat’s narrow and deep food dishes with wide, shallow, flat bowls. Thankfully due to our awareness for cats, unlike regular cat food bowl, we created these ceramic cat feed trays that are specifically designed to be whisker friendly. These dishes have a wider opening and tend to be shallow so the cat’s whisker’s do not brush against the sides of the bowl while they eat or drink.”
