Taco Bo

October 10, 2005 By Joi

Steph and her Bo

The cat in the picture’s name is Bo (the girl is my daughter Steph and is rarely seen without Bo – you see one, you see the other).

He’s one of Carly’s kittens and has got one of the wackiest personalities of any cat we’ve ever had. He seems to like living life on the edge…which is probably why Steph doesn’t let him EVER out of her sight and RARELY out of her hands.

When he was only a few weeks old, he and his sister, Alexa, somehow got up into my husband’s car without us knowing, then went for a ride with him and one of our other daughters (Brittany). They stopped at a grocery store, and Britt noticed a girl walking off with a tiny kitten that looked just like Alexa. She got out, went over to the girl and saw that it was IN FACT Alexa. They brought her home and we all realized that Bo wasn’t accounted for.

It was about to storm, and we were all getting sicker by the minute. My husband and I went driving around to where he and Britt had gone. As luck would have it, they had made a lot of stops: a Pizza restaurant, Kroger, Taco Bell…not to mention all the stop lights in between.

I asked the workers at Taco Bell if anyone had seen a tiny white kitten and the girl said someone had nearly hit one a little earlier in the drive thru.

Playing chicken with a car? We knew we’d found our man.

We got out and walked around the lot beside Taco Bell – there were lots of evergreen trees and we thought a frightened kitten would surely go there, even Bo. Sure enough, we FINALLY found him, as it was beginning to storm, underneath a tree shaking.

We brought him home to a relieved Steph who I was even more worried about than Bo!

He pulled a similar trick a few weeks later by sneaking up into our Caravan – he rode across town and back. (Again, to Taco Bell!) When we pulled up, we saw him get out shaking. My driving does that to people.

I’m just tickled to death that he has gotten too big to pull anything like that again.

Meet Gorgeous Alexa

Sweet Alexa

The beauty in the pic above is Alexa, Carly’s only female kitten. She (Alexa, not Carly for pity’s sake) is an absolute sweetheart – like all the boy cats, she’s very quick to purr and loves to snuggle.

She’s the smallest of all three of them, but has the loudest meow by far. (My husband would attribute this to the female factor.) Aside from the trip to Kroger that was described in Bo’s post, Alexa never causes any problems whatsoever. Let’s attribute that to the female factor, too.

Carly Update – Making Our Grumpy Baby Play Well With Others

November 20, 2004 By Joi

Carly with Bo and Adam

As I’ve said in previous posts, we’ve been battling a very grouchy little cat around our house. Carly has, for some time now, been extremely antisocial and aggressive toward other cats, even to her own kittens.

She growls, hisses, and even slaps when the others come near her, which thankfully isn’t too often.

I started thinking that it’s probably a territorial thing. She was the only kitten her mother had, and then her mother disappeared when she was only 6 months old (disappeared or fled, as Carly’s always been a little terror!) So, Carly was our only outside cat for over a year. Just her….her bed, her chairs, her cat food, her home, her family…. Next thing you know, she has four other cats all lying in her furniture, eating off of her dishes, etc.

So, I fixed up a little special place by the back door, with a special little house (I confess, I even bought her her own baby blanket) – and a table where I serve her food, separate from the others. I’m making sure that only Carly is allowed in the house and that the others don’t get on her table. So far, so good, because frankly having her off to herself suits them as much as it does her!

She’s acting better, although she won’t win any Miss Congeniality awards. She’s letting me pet her more…she even purred for, like, two minutes yesterday while I rubbed her head. Then she saw one of her “kids” and the purr roared into a growl.

Oh well, the two minutes were sweet while they lasted!

Chicken Soup for the Soul: The Magic of Cats

Chicken Soup for the Soul’s wonderfully entertaining and inspirational The Magic of Cats. My oldest daughter, Emily, has a story about one of my grandcats (“Eddie”) in this collection!

MinJee

Beautiful “MinJee”
We have inside and outside cats and we love them all like family. The beauty, above, is MinJee and she is as sweet as she is gorgeous.

If the spoiled inside crew would allow it, needless to say they’d ALL be inside. As it is, our outside cats have their own custom-built wooden homes and penthouses and, yes, they are all equipped with heating pads for the cold months.

We also feed and care for feral cats. Some honor us by following us home and allowing us to give them a forever home and to, more importantly, be their forever family.
