I visited my oldest daughter and her baby girl (a gorgeous black kitten named “Janie”) this afternoon. As I laid in the floor playing with her (Janie, not my daughter!), I couldn’t help thinking, “Why would anyone ever want to live in a house without a cat?” Cats make a house a home and the only people who don’t realize that are the ones who don’t have cats.

Last night, I was looking at the large amount of space our Christmas tree takes up in our living room. It’s been up so long, I was trying to remember what actually occupied the corner before November 1st! Alexa LOVES lying near the tree, weaving in and out of the gift bags and boxes. When my husband came home last night, I was watching an episode of a show I’ve become totally addicted to, Restaurant Impossible on the Food Network. I realized that it was “that time of year already” when he came through and asked if I had a big cover he could put over a couple of lawn chairs for Hannah, one of our outside cats. The other two outside babies, Jelly Bean and Queen Fatima, head for the garage when the weather’s cold. We keep the door cracked just wide enough for them to get in and put straw up in the loft. Whenever I check on the conditions during the winter, I’m always amazed at just how cozy it is.
Hannah will have none of it, though. It has to be really bad for her to resort to the garage. She loves her little section of the car port and seldom ever strays away from it. So, when it’s cool, rainy, and/or windy, we build elaborate tents for her. Sometimes JB and QF are so impressed, they keep her company in the tent instead of heading for the garage.
*** For those who don’t know, and may be wondering, “Why don’t such cat fanatics simply bring their babies indoors?,” in a word, Alexa. She’s our inside cat and a more spoiled, bigger baby has never existed! She would put her paw down at the thought of other cats coming into her territory. I’m really scared there’d be a cat fight and we just can’t chance it. Besides, the other 3 love the great outdoors and, fortunately, we live in a remote area where there aren’t any threats. The worst that’s ever happened to any of the three involved a skunk and Fatima!
We went outside last night and created a big, thick tent for Hannah with the thickest bedspread you can imagine. During the winter months, I make the tent spam across several iron lawn chairs – big enough to include a few cat houses inside. Last year’s masterpiece was so elaborate and fancy schmancy we called it Baghdad. They all resided in Baghdad most of the time!
Even though she lives inside, Miss Alexa sometimes seems to crave more heat as well. Even when humans think the temperature in the house is “toasty,” our cats wouldn’t mind a little extra warmth. Brilliant! As someone who works from home – sitting busily at her computer desk each day, coffee to the left and cat (Alexa) to the right – I can honestly say that this is one of the most ingenious cat beds or perches I’ve ever seen. Before Alexa came along and became my adorable secretary, the position was held for many, many, many years by Prissy. She, too, was an adorable secretary. I can picture Alexa sleeping inside the house section, as well as using the scratching post part. This morning, as I was admiring our beautiful purple morning glories (planted specifically beneath one of Alexa’s favorite windows – so she can admire butterflies and hummingbirds up close and personal), I realized that IF there were such a thing as reincarnation, you could do a lot worse than coming back as a pampered house cat! They don’t have to fight for anything – food, water, shelter, a bed, attention, safety, head scratches, 8:00 am hummingbird shows….
I read not long ago that one of the things we Americans DIDN’T cut back on during the slumping economy was pet food and pet supplies. We love our babies! They bring us so much love, happiness, joy, companionship, and laughter – how could we NOT want to give them everything their little cat hearts desire?
Admittedly, I just returned from the store with cat food, fresh cat litter, and even a bag of Whiska’s Cat Treats. All of our cats absolutely adore these cat treats, especially the Salmon variety.
Now, Alexa’s curled up in her favorite cat bed – belly full and more content than anyone or anything has a right to be!
Three of our outside babies (outside simply because Princess Alexa wouldn’t accept just being “one” of the cats inside… she has to be “the” diva who lives inside with her people) Hannah, Fatima, and Jelly Bean are sprawled out in the shade, enjoying their full bellies and the August breeze.
