Beautiful actress Hilary Swank and her two precious adopted dogs
I was sent a very heart-warming and encouraging final update on Iams Home 4 the Holidays (IH4TH). IH4TH had its most successful adoption drive ever by placing nearly 1.4 million pets into loving homes in the last three months!
1.4 million babies! If that doesn’t touch your heart, I’m not sure it can be touched.
Between Oct. 1, 2009 and Jan. 4, 2010, more than 3,500 animal organizations and the IH4TH ambassador—two-time Academy Award-winning actress Hilary Swank—proved to be a powerful combination in the massive effort to help reduce pet homelessness.
“I’m proud to be part of such an amazing cause and I hope the many families who adopted through the IH4TH program will experience the same unconditional love and fulfillment my dogs Karoo and Rumi give me every day,” said Swank. “I hope our success inspires everyone to get involved and continue to help eradicate pet homelessness because there are millions of animals who still need our help and we all have the ability to help make a difference.”
The following animals were adopted this year:
* 729,357 dogs
* 588,265 cats
* 46,016 other animals (including rabbits, reptiles, horses, birds and more)
As one of the most successful pet adoption programs in the world, IH4TH partners thousands of animal organizations dedicated to helping place homeless animals with happy, loving homes. Founded in 1999 by the Helen Woodward Animal Center and supported by Iams, IH4TH—along with nearly 3,500 pet adoption centers – has helped more than 4.6 million pets find shelter, including nearly 1.4 million from just this year!
The next IH4TH program will kick off on Oct. 1 2010, but this is still an issue that needs attention—and there are plenty of ways to get involved now! To learn more about how to make a difference in the life of an orphaned pet, including finding participating shelters, volunteering or making a donation to support animal organizations and pets awaiting new homes, visit www.iamshome4theholidays.com.
As a pet lover extraordinaire, I want to say thanks to Hilary Swank, Iams, and every single very special person who gave a precious animal a new home. May your newly expanded family be ridiculously happy and your homes filled with love.
If Hilary weren’t already one of my absolute favorite stars, she would be now. But, alas, I’ve adored her since I first saw her.

Yesterday, my daughter Emily and I went to the Library. As always, I immediately headed to the books about animals and birds first. My route is pretty predictable: I look for books about cats, birds, polar bears, tigers, and other animals that fascinate me… then I look for new books in the Spiritual aisle… then I head directly for the cookbooks. When I leave, my arms are full of great new adventures!
One of the books I grabbed yesterday was The Ultimate Cat Lover: The Best Experts’ Advice for a Happy, Healthy Cat with Stories and Photos of Fabulous Felines
by Marty Becker. This book is moving me mightily! First of all, there is a picture inside that looks a lot like my beloved Svenn and another one looks just like my beloved Bo. I still miss these little guys so much, and seeing the resemblances made my eyes fill with tears.
There’s also a picture of a cat that looks like my precious Prissy would have looked if she had eaten 2 pigs, 4 roosters, 18 hamsters, and Bo and Svenn. It’s a big, beautiful baby! It brought a smile to my face, which was most welcomed at the time. Isn’t it amazing that our cats can affect us so strongly, even after they’re gone?
I also had a good old emotional moment while reading the second story in the book, “George and Gracie.” Powerful stuff! Not all of the stories result in misty eyes – many result in smiles and even laughter.
These stories (and pictures) remind us of just how special cats are. They are utterly magnificent little creatures and I couldn’t imagine the world (or my home or yard) without them. I highly recommend this beautiful book for all cat lovers. I plan on ordering my own copy, so I’ll have it to enjoy long after I’ve taken the library copy back.
There’s also a great section filled with cat tips and little known facts.
Click the link above to order this very special book on Amazon for jut $10. I know you’re going to love this book!

I’m not even lying, over the course of my life I’ve had more pets than I could even name in an hour – and most of them have been cats. I haven’t lived an unusually LONG time, I’ve simply had a large number of cats at a time over the years! We lived waaaay out in the country (on land with a big red barn) once and the kitty population absolutely exploded!
Now that I think about it, we’ve never really had much of a mouse problem.
A few of the biggest characters over the years have been Siamese cats. Solo was a much-beloved cat I had from the time I was about 8 until I was married. He was gorgeous with the most incredibly blue (crossed!) eyes. He had a mean streak in him that we all got a huge kick out of. Sometimes, when my dad was standing in front of the mirror shaving, Solo would sneak up behind him, turn his head to the side and bite him on the ankle. My dad cut himself more than once. When we heard, “Owww!” – we knew Solo had struck and drawn blood.
Another Siamese we had was when we lived in the country. His name was Shy-Si and he meowed constantly. Any time we looked outside, Shy-Si was talking – either to another cat, the door, his food, one of the cars… didn’t matter. He simply loved the sound of his voice.
I think all Siamese cats love the sound of their voice, and why wouldn’t they? It’s almost musical.
If you love Siamese cats too, you’ll love the products in this post. The I Love Siamese Cats Hooded Sweatshirt
, above, would let the rest of the world know just how much you love this beautiful, magnificent cat.
There are similar t-shirts available as well – for ladies and men.
I also love the I Love Siamese Cats Tote Bag
, below. Gorgeous!

It’s well known that cats, particularly feral cats, like to spray in order to mark their territory. They tend to do this at vertical objects like walls or a doorposts. But often they may just urinate on the carpet as well. The issue is further aggravated if your cat is suffering a urinary tract infection. You thought that cat urine smell was bad before? With a feline UTI thrown in, that urine has a uniquely awful odor. A cat’s urinary infection is also accompanied by feline urinary incontinence, wherein the cat is unable to control the urine.
Most likely, your cat is going to return to the same spot on the carpet where he urinated initially. This can happen despite your conviction that you cleaned the carpet as thoroughly and carefully as you knew how. This repeated peeing at the same spot can result in an offensive ammonia smell that can be very exasperating. If it isn’t cleaned correctly it gives a variety of nasty bacteria a golden opportunity to multiply and grow. The longer you leave the problem to fester, the larger the issue is certain to become. Once the urine soaks through the carpet and into the floor boards you stand zero chance of getting to it without pulling the carpet back.
Tired Of Your House Smelling Like A Biological Weapons Lab?
So, how to get cat urine out of the carpet, permanently? Cleaning the carpet and effectively removing the offensive odor of cat urine depends on the surface underlying the carpet. If the floor below is linoleum or another easy-clean surface, the problem is minimal as you may clean it easily with plain water or detergent. It’s obviously much more of an issue when the cat urine smell is found on a liquid absorbing surface.
Step one in this circumstance is to take tissue paper, a rag or a towel and press it firmly over the damp spot in the carpet to soak up the most liquid that you can. Most cat urine removal products for sale on the market contain enzymes that function as catalysts to start a chemical reaction in the urine, making it a snap to clean. These products have varying strengths and contain chemicals that will have diverse effects on different surfaces. Be sure to read and follow the directions on the label for how to proceed from this point.
In addition, here are some home remedies that will help you deal with this issue of a nasty cat urine smell:
- A bowl of naphthalene flakes aids in keeping cats away from the carpet. A touch of citronella on cotton balls in a bowl will also keep them away as cats deeply dislike the scent of aromatic lemon grass oils.
- Add a little soap into a mixture of vinegar and water (1:3) and pour over the affected area. Soak up the excess liquid with a rag. Repeat this process with clean water and soak in water again. Sprinkle a little baking soda over the area, leave it there for about 24 hours, and then vacuum it up.
- Adding a small amount of Listerine mouthwash to a vinegar and water solution will help dispose of the smell. Rinse with clean water and soak.
- Pour a bit of peroxide over the area and then wash with warm water and soak. However, don’t use this method on carpets as peroxide has a tendency to ruin the color.
Whether or not you’re dealing with a cat’s urinary infection, cat urine smell is something you want to remove from your house as soon as you can. Thanks to their reluctance to drink water, cat pee is especially concentrated and potent, which explains why you can practically use it to remove wallpaper. But with the steps outlined above, and quick action on your part, it doesn’t have to be a permanent problem.
Susan Livingstone built The Cat Bladder Blog because she loves cats, which is just as well since she is basically a slave to their whims. After years of spending money on them, she is now reversing that trend by offering products, information, advice and help to cat owners everywhere — specifically those who need resources for dealing with cat urinary tract infections. You can visit her site to find many more articles on feline urinary tract health, natural, herbal, organic and homeopathic remedies for the prevention of cat UTI, the best cat urinary tract food, organic and recycled products like litter, furniture and cat trees, and links to other information on cat medicine and common feline disease prevention.

What a fantastic idea – a scrapbook for our babies… as in our furry babies. The scrapbook above is the Alvin Cat 12×12 Scrapbook W-frame
.
The 12 x 12 cat memory book features a little window frame on the front for a picture of your baby or babies. Precious, right?
This adorable scrapbook contains 10 top-loading pages, clear protectors and 10 heavy weight white paper inserts. It is simply the ideal gift for a cat lover – especially if you go ahead and put a picture of their beloved cat on the front for them. Can you imagine their face when they see it?!
This definitely gets my vote as one of the most ingenious cat lover products ever. It’s funny how the whole world knows how much we love our cats and how much we’re willing to do in the name of that love. Scrapbooking is definitely one of those things!

Meet Max. This handsome cat is one lucky little guy.
Here’s his story: The 9-year-old cat (who reminds me of our own little Hannah) went missing in Boulder, Colorado in mid-June. A naughty little boy, he snuck out of the hotel that his family, the Deraneys of Niedernhausen, Germany, were staying in. They had spent the summer at the hotel, and were visiting a family member when Max stepped out.
Despite an intense search, Max had not been located before the family had to return to Germany. Can you imagine?!
Max was found October 5th, less than a mile from the hotel. A cat-loving couple saw him roaming the streets and took him to the Humane Society, hoping to adopt him if he didn’t have an owner. A microchip scan showed that Max did have a home … a German home – 5,000 miles away!
Max’s survival for four months could “quite possibly be due to the kindness of people in the community,” said Kim Terlau, animal services supervisor at the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
“He is an active cat and does show interest in prey behavior, but to be honest, I’m not sure how skilled of a hunter he is,” she said. When he was first brought to the shelter, he was famished, scarfing down his food as soon as it was set in front of him.
Max’s mother came to the states for him and flew him back home to Germany. I’m pretty sure he didn’t even get a stern “talking to.”
How wonderful is it to hear about animal story with a happy ending? Warms the heart.
