Keep Your Cat Warm This Winter with a Heated Cat Bed!

When my husband came home last night, I was watching an episode of a show I’ve become totally addicted to, Restaurant Impossible on the Food Network. I realized that it was “that time of year already” when he came through and asked if I had a big cover he could put over a couple of lawn chairs for Hannah, one of our outside cats.  The other two outside babies, Jelly Bean and Queen Fatima, head for the garage when the weather’s cold. We keep the door cracked just wide enough for them to get in and put straw up in the loft. Whenever I check on the conditions during the winter, I’m always amazed at just how cozy it is.

Hannah will have none of it, though. It has to be really bad for her to resort to the garage. She loves her little section of the car port and seldom ever strays away from it.  So, when it’s cool, rainy, and/or windy, we build elaborate tents for her. Sometimes JB and QF are so impressed, they keep her company in the tent instead of heading for the garage.

*** For those who don’t know, and may be wondering, “Why don’t such cat fanatics simply bring their babies indoors?,” in a word, Alexa.  She’s our inside cat and a more spoiled, bigger baby has never existed!  She would put her paw down at the thought of other cats coming into her territory. I’m really scared there’d be a cat fight and we just can’t chance it.  Besides, the other 3 love the great outdoors and, fortunately, we live in a remote area where there aren’t any threats.  The worst that’s ever happened to any of the three involved a skunk and Fatima!

We went outside last night and created a big, thick tent for Hannah with the thickest bedspread you can imagine.  During the winter months, I make the tent spam across several iron lawn chairs – big enough to include a few cat houses inside.  Last year’s masterpiece was so elaborate and fancy schmancy we called it Baghdad. They all resided in Baghdad most of the time!

Even though she lives inside, Miss Alexa sometimes seems to crave more heat as well. Even when humans think the temperature in the house is “toasty,” our cats wouldn’t mind a little extra warmth. Outsmarting a Cat with Cat Scratch Fever

Alexa, in the picture above, seems to be voicing her concern over the state of one of her beloved cardboard Super Scratchers.  I try to keep them changed out often because the girl is MAD about them.  We keep several of them in the house, near some of her favorite places to scratch.  More than any cat I’ve ever had the pleasure of being Mommy to, Alexa is a furry little ninja when it comes to scratching.  I have to work to stay a step ahead of her, but placing scratching posts in her favorite areas helps.

Thank goodness!

Cats love to scratch.  We have to remind ourselves that they have no idea they’re doing anything wrong. Scratching is as natural as eating and drinking for a cat.  Our approach has to be one of outsmarting the cat.  It’s absolutely impossible to make her NOT want to scratch.  Common sense dictates that we give our cats alternatives.  We can’t very well take the approach that they WILL NOT SCRATCH EVER AGAIN!  We’ll be woefully disappointed and our cats will think we’ve completely lost our minds.
