The Cat’s Out of the Bag!
Ever wonder where the phrase, “The cat’s out of the bag” came from. I’m by nature a curious (read: nosy) person, so I’ve always wondered.
I only recently found out, though - as in this morning. And since I never could keep a secret, I just had to come spill my knowledge out all over the blog.
In Medieval England, little pigs were sold in the marketplace for a nice profit. The farmers would carry them to market in a burlap bag. This made it easier for the buyer to take “this little piggy” home. But shady, n’er do well buyers often would try to trick the buyer by concealing large cats in the bag instead.
When the buyer would open the bag….you got it, “The cat was out of the bag.” And probably not in the best of moods!
