The Aristocats Cat Food Line is a Hit!

Disney (a name that brings a smile to just about every face, including mine) has launched, mouse ears first, into the $75 billion global pet care industry ($36 billion in the U.S., alone) with lines of products for cats, dogs, fish, and hamsters. I believe they started with an Old Yeller line of dog food products.

I really first took notice when I saw their Aristocats Cat Food on the shelves at Kroger. Our babies love to try new goodies, so I bought one of each flavor. (On a side note, the cans are perfectly adorable, with scenes from the movie on the side.) This was, honestly, one of the only brands of cat food that our cats, unanimously, loved. Whiskas and Aristocats now stand as the only two “wet food” varieties that result in extremely happy cats and over-licked cat dishes around our house.

Prissy and Bo will absolutely eat anything you set in front of them. As though she was determined to prove it, the other day an olive fell off of my pizza and Prissy ate it before I could pick it up. Then she wanted more but I just couldn’t feel good about myself feeding olives to a cat.

Svenn and Alexa are pickier than Bo and Prissy. Usually, he only likes dry food (and only some brands, at that), but he threw himself into the Aristocats cat food. They’ve all requested that I grab more cans on my next Kroger trip. I’m a soft touch, so OF COURSE I’ll do just that!

Apparently, Disney is also planning to launch a line of cat products from the movie “That Darn Cat.” My test panel is looking forward to it!

I can’t even stand the smell of this stuff. This is the first canned catfood I have ever opened that actually makes me want to puke and I don’t have a weak stomach.

My cat Romeo ate the shrimp canned catfood, but refuses to eat the Ocean Whitefish and Tuna. It smells like a dead fish sitting on the bank for days. So I can’t blame him. I came across this blog while searching for a complaint website for this food.

It is amazing on the packaging you can find an address (name of company and city, state only), but no phone number, etc. Guess they hope to sell on Disney name alone.

I am afraid to feed this to my cat it smells spoiled and I do not want to make my 11yr old cat sick.

I have to agree with Angela, this cat food STINKS!! Like something dead along the road in the heat. My cat won’t even eat the stuff, can’t blame him. I have read the box over and there is no address or phone number to actually complain to. No “Satisfaction Guaranteed” is printed anywhere on the box. Not a good sign. Now I am stuck with a box of food I am afraid to feed to my cat (17 yr old).

I have to agree strongly with the other posters. I usually don’t mind the smell of canned cat food, but I could not believe the first time I opened a can, the food smelled so bad. I can’t believe my cat eats it, but I won’t buy it again. It almost makes me sick.

We didn’t notice the food smelling bad, but our cat (normally very enthusiastic about *any* food of this sort) reacted as though we’d put down some non-food item like marbles or bits of wood — and then went back to begging for his dinner. At least we’d only bought one can. A-risk-o’-cats is more like it. Four paws down (our critic doesn’t have thumbs)!

This cat food stinks! One of the cans actually sprung a leak in the drawer it was in, and when I opened the drawer the smell honestly almost knocked me over! It’s the exact same smell that I remember from camp of a rat that had died in the wall.

Their Beef Dinner catfood smells so bad that I put it on the porch and my neighbor thought there was a dead creature in the shrubs! I too looked for a website or phone number on the label to no avail. How unusual in this day to not provide customer support available. The Pheasant Dinner (I truly wonder what this is!) does not have nearly the offensive smell. Remarkably, my extremely finicky cat likes this offensive stuff. Too bad, the two legged variety in this household can not deal with the smell! I won’t be buying it again. Sad thought - can you imagine the smell the workers in the cat food factory have to put up with! That would make me walk off the job.

We have 4 cats, two 13 year olds,(Sox and Tiger) and 2 one-year olds Charlie and Jade). We bought Aristocats for the babies, and they love it, so do the “big boys”. When we opened the yellowfin tuna and wild rice, I thought “no way” cats don’t eat rice, they loved it! When I opened the chicken caciticore I thought no way…cats and tomatoes… they loved it! I can’t believe all the negative comments you have received, we buy them all the time and will continue to do so. Thanks for a refreshing new product!

I have 2 VERY spoiled kitties, Sushi and Luna, Sushi who is 6 months old, is a new member of our family since last week and is even more spoiled than our 1 year and a half old Luna. I bought this other brand (Fancy feast) thinking they would love it, and only Luna ate a bit. Then last night i noticed the Aristocats brand, and gave it a shot, i tried the one that has Trout in it, i can’t remember the name exactly, but both my kitties even my conceited Sushi loved it, i will try more of the cans i bought tonight and see if they like the different flavors, and for me, they didn’t smell bad, they smelled just like tuna fish, maybe the people who came across bad smells had some bad luck with a can, i don’t know. But usually this kind of food’s smell is strong because cats like it to smell strong. I don’t know though.
I give this product 5 paws up. And it is a bit cheaper than Fancy Feast! =)

I wonder what the manufacturers put in the pet food to make some of it smell foul. You can bet if it smells bad in the can it will smell worse when it comes out the other end. We found that Kibbles ‘N Bits was a food both of our dogs loved. We loved it too until watching television later and both dogs had competing gas contests. The smell was so bad that we had to leave the house in fear of getting sick!

  10. Sue on November 24th, 2007 1:19 pm

This stank so bad I had to open the entire house. It does stink even worse as my kitten is puking and crapping all over - soooo sick. Iam debaiting taker her to the vet and watching the other pets. I found this site looking for possible poisining.

    Stay away!!!!!

I was having a very hard time finding a food that my very picky kitten would eat. Amber absolutely loves this food. She knows exactly when she gets fed and will get pushy if I am late feeding her. I was, however, puzzled to find no way of contacting the company on the box or cans. I do not agree with all the other complaints about the smell. We have not had an issue with that. However, Amber, does not care for food with fish in it. So we haven’t tried any of those flavors.

This cat food is awful. It almost killed my cat. She ate this crap and started loosing weight and almost died.

  13. Aimee on December 24th, 2007 9:34 pm

I doubt it was the food that almost killed your cat.

Our kitten loves the pheasant food, but we noticed there are bones in it. I wanted to write an email or call the company but I can’t find a website. Do you know if there is one?

  14. Danna Cole on January 4th, 2008 3:34 pm

I was checking websites to see who makes Aristocats cat food so I could ask about the Beef dinner. Alas, there is no way to contact the manufacturer. When I opened the can it smelled like a dead animal. My cat took one sniff and ran out of the room. I had to put it down the disposal to (hopefully) get rid of the odor. The others didn’t have the terribly offensive odor, but I will not be purchasing any more cans of this food. I’m a little afraid of it …and sadly, it was made in the USA.

The Aristocats cat food is first canned cat food my cat, Austin 13 years old, will eat and want more. Since I have been told by my doctor Austin had to be on a high protein diet for health reasons. I have tried just about all the major brands, the vets recommended, and even some of the cheap ones. I have seen some of the other posts about the smell. To me the smell is not as bad some the name brands. So as long Austin will eat it I’m happy!

My wife and I have been trying to get the name and address of the company from both Fred Meyer and Kroger (who owns both Fred Meyer and Embassy International, who distributes the product) and have run into a brick wall. They tell us that the information about the supplier is “propriatary” and refuse to divulge it. The best I could do was get an address for Embassy Internatioal at Embassy International
    Attn: Ellen Griffin - GO2
    1014 Vine Street
    Cincinnati, OH 45202

Seems crazy that the company who actually makes a food product can be kept a top secret from the public.

Ooops, shold have added an email contact. Its ellen.griffin@kroger.com

This cat food may stink… This cat food may be inexpensive in comparison to Fancy Feast, etc. However, after trying organic foods, high dollar foods, and all other kinds of food, this is the ONLY food that my cats will eat! Both are old: 15 years and 20 years respectively. The old one has been wasting away because he would not eat. He scarfs this food down like there’s no tomorrow. In fact, I’m happy to say that he has GAINED weight! Woo hoo!!!! The younger of the two has kidney issues and he too has been gaining weight on this food. I stomach the stink and every thing else as long as they keep on eating.

I have purchased several boxes of Aristocat. My cat loved it and my dog would try to get the cat to leave some so that he could eat it. The reason I found this blog is that I just bought a new box of it. Neither animal will touch it. They turn up their noses and walk away, even when hungry. I wonder if it should be recalled for some reason.

  20. springboard on January 23rd, 2008 3:24 pm

I just bought a 24 can pack, as I was tired of paying the high price for Fancy Feast. Now I have several cans that wont open as the pop top broke off. there is NO information on who the manufacturer is and when I google the distributor, i dont find anything…i am getting in touch with Kroger to file a complaint, and YES, this food smells really bad, but my cats seem to like it.

  21. Lana on January 23rd, 2008 8:08 pm

Our cat, Sacco is not a picky eater but we have tried all 3 varieties of your seafood selection and he will not go near it. I could have dealt with its oder (and never to buy it again) if Sacco would have eaten it. In trying to contact the manufacturer to let them know that this,so call cat food should be taken off the market as it will never be successful, I too, hit a road block. No wonder, they can’t be proud of this product. The question now, is what do I do with the remaining 21 cans?

  22. greg on April 9th, 2008 1:45 pm

Probably don’t want to feed this to your cat, or even your worst enemy.

The reason this stuff smells awful, and a finely tuned feline olfactory sense won’t allow a cat to eat this junk is probably obvious…

It contains, among other things, “Animal digest” which is described by law as:

A material which results from chemical and/or enzymatic hydrolysis of clean and undecomposed animal tissue. The animal tissues used shall be exclusive of hair, horns, teeth, hooves and feathers, except in such trace amounts as might occur unavoidably in good factory practice and shall be suitable for animal feed. If it bears a name descriptive of its kind or flavor(s), it must correspond thereto.

A cooked-down broth made from unspecified parts of unspecified animals. The animals used can be obtained from any source, so there is no control over quality or contamination. Any kind of animal can be included: “4-D animals” (dead, diseased, disabled, or dying prior to slaughter), goats, pigs, horses, rats, misc. roadkill, animals euthanized at shelters, restaurant and supermarket refuse and so on.

    YUM, Disney, YUM…

i bought this for my little kitty and let me tell you something he loves it.

  24. Char on June 24th, 2008 8:54 pm

I have one very very picky cat and he loves this stuff. I dont think is smells any worse than the other brands I have bought in the past. No problems here. WILL continue to buy this food. :)
