Solo

Anyone who’s been around cats for any amount of time knows how amazingly intelligent they are, as well as what distinctive personalities each have.

While writing another post today for another of our blogs, I started thinking about an amazingly colorful cat from my yesterdays.

One of the most colorful cats we eve had was a cross-eyed Siamese cat we had when I was growing up. His name was Solo and he was one of the most singularly beautiful and intelligent animals I’ve ever known. He also carried grudges twice as far as Lewis and Clark’s odyssey carried them.

My dad was always getting on Solo’s bad side (then again, his good side was so tiny, no one could get on it.). Solo loved to lay on top of the television, and inevitably his tail or a leg would drop down in front of the screeen. So, my dad would have to go move it out of Matt Dillon or Baretta’s way. Then he’d tuck it up under the beast. If he was lucky, Solo would never awaken to realize he had been compromised. Dad acted pretty fast with swift, deft movement, so normally he never stirred.

However, there were times when Solo’s blue eyes would shoot open and he’d bolt straight up. He’d make eye contact with my dad as well as anyone else in the room, making sure we weren’t stupid enough to be laughing. Then he’d lie back down and resume his sleep.

BUT, that night when my dad would be shaving in front of the mirror….or if he was in the kitchen fixing a Gunsmoke snack, Solo would calmly walk up, tilt his head and bite him on the ankle.

Score settled.
