Pet Food Scare Continuing to Make the News
I’m sure you’ve been like me - really cautious every time you buy pet food. I’ve been buying Whiska’s - our cats’ favorite food and one untouched by the tragic scandal, thus far.
It’s the thus far type of mentality, I guess, that has a lot of pet lovers taking drastic measures. I’ve read on a lot of forums and blogs (and even a CNN article) that lots of pet owners are turning away from pet food and turning toward human food - as in leftovers as well as specially prepared meals.
Hopefully it’ll only be a temporary solution, until the scare passes. It would be next to impossible for the average person to provide their pet with everything he or she needs in the way of nutrients. Most of us don’t even eat as healthily as we should!
I completely understand the feeling of helplessness and frustration - but, God willing this will soon be a horrible memory and nothing like this will happen again.
Stay informed - keep one eye on the news and both eyes on your furry babies!

. I can’t believe how much disinformation is out there about pet nutrition. There’s so much artificial flavoring and chemicals in our packaged pet foods. I think it’s interesting that we aren’t even feeding our pets the foods they were born to eat. The diet of the average American pet is no where close to what these animals eat in the wild. I recently wrote a post about all-natural cat and dog food. I thought you pet lovers out their might be interested. Most generic pet foods on the market are primarily carbohydrates but cats and dogs are carnivores. You can read more at: http://thisgreenlife.wordpress.com/2007/04/26/a-healthy-diet/
I have an update: Have you seen the latest article in the NY Times that came out yesterday? It blows the lid off of China’s pet food manufacturing practices. Check this out:

This serves as evidence that we need to be even more aware of the source and ingredients of our pet foods. Most reputable pet food manufacturers are sharing this information on their web sites now. Many people are joining the local food movement (which I am a huge proponent of) and rediscovering the benefits of buying locally produced food. Should we follow the same rule when it comes to the diet of our pets?
Thanks SO MUCH for the updates - I’m so glad to see people like you who are treating this as the serious matter that it is. It’s really scary. -Joi
